Conferences & Academic Events

Cognitive Science flourishes at the intersection of disciplines. At Nicolaus Copernicus University, we believe that academic growth requires active participation in the global exchange of ideas.

Recent Highlight (June 2025)

Perspectives on Child Development: Social Learning and Interaction

Organized by the Department of Cognitive Science and the Institute of Psychology at NCU.

This landmark international conference brought together elite researchers to investigate a fundamental question: how do children understand the social world? The event fostered a unique interdisciplinary dialogue across developmental psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience.

Central Themes & Core Questions:
The scientific program explored the developmental roots of trust, communication, and mentalizing. Discussions focused on critical mechanisms such as:

  • Epistemic Trust: How do children evaluate the reliability of information coming from others?
  • Theory of Mind (ToM): The development of mentalizing and emotional understanding.
  • Social Coordination: How children coordinate emotionally and behaviorally with caregivers.
  • Neurobiology of Connection: Neural and behavioral synchrony in early development.

World-Class Keynote Speakers:
We were honored to host a distinguished group of experts who are shaping the field of developmental science. The lineup included Prof. Paul L. Harris (Harvard University), Francisco Pons (University of Oslo), Fabrice Clément (University of Neuchâtel), Arvid Kappas (Constructor University), and Tone Kristine Hermansen (University of Oslo), alongside leading Polish researchers.

Neuromania: International Scientific Conference

Neuromania is a flagship project of the Toruń Cognitive Science Student Club (TKK). Launched in 2013, it has evolved from a national meeting into a prestigious international conference. Its primary goal is to integrate the academic community—bringing together students, PhD candidates, and experienced researchers to share the latest achievements in brain research, mind studies, and Artificial Intelligence.

Current Focus: „Act and Think with AI”

The most recent editions have focused on the transformative role of technology. We explored how Artificial Intelligence is reshaping science, medicine, and Virtual Reality (VR). The conference serves as a platform to discuss not just theory, but the practical applications of cognitive models in modern technology.

Past Keynote Speakers:
We prioritize high scientific standards. Our stage has hosted world-class experts and pioneers in cognitive science, including Peter Gärdenfors, Daniel Everett, Rob van der Lubbe, Roberto Bottini, Marek Harat, Marcin Miłkowski, and Małgorzata Kossut.

The Summer School of Cognitive Science (LSK)

A nationwide interdisciplinary initiative held in Kazimierz Dolny.

The Summer School is not designed merely as a series of lectures, but as an intensive intellectual retreat. The core idea is to gather students, PhD candidates, and professors to analyze complex problems together. The format combines high-level theoretical seminars with practical workshops, fostering a strong culture of mentorship. The unique atmosphere encourages open debate, where students and experts discuss ideas on equal footing—often continuing their conversations long into the evening.

Dynamic & Diverse Themes: Each edition of the School revolves around a specific, thought-provoking theme, offering a deep dive into the many facets of cognition. Over the years, we have navigated through a vast intellectual landscape—exploring the intricacies of the Emotional and Creative Mind, analyzing how we construct reality through Metaphors and Narratives, and examining the challenges of the Extended Mind. This thematic diversity ensures that every year offers a fresh perspective, bridging the gap between philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.

A Joint Effort: What makes LSK unique is its collaborative spirit. Our department (UMK) proudly co-organizes this event alongside the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS), and the Polish Cognitive Science Society (PTK).
