Researchers from the NCU Department of Cognitive Science—in cooperation with the Pro Liberis et Arte Foundation, Michelin Poland, and numerous institutional and community partners (including the Center for Diagnosis, Treatment and Therapy of Autism, the Regional Specialized Children’s Hospital, the Olsztyn Science and Technology Park, the Municipal Social Welfare Center in Purda, the Primary School in Klebark, and the University of Warmia and Mazury)—organized a science-educational event in Olsztyn entitled „Brain, AI, and Emerging Technologies: An Intergenerational Perspective.” The gathering was addressed to youth, parents, caregivers, seniors, teachers, as well as representatives of local governments and NGOs. Its purpose was to share reliable knowledge about human functioning in the world of emerging technologies and provide a collaborative forum to discuss the opportunities and challenges tied to AI development.

The cognitive scientists explained in an accessible manner how the brain responds to the use of smartphones, social media, video games, virtual reality, and AI-driven tools. Attendees learned about recent research findings and discovered how scientists study attention, cognitive processes, and human behavior in digital environments.

A highlight of the event was the live demonstrations of modern scientific research equipment. Participants had the chance to see EEG systems, eye-trackers, and VR headsets up close. This hands-on approach allowed attendees not only to listen to lectures but also to experience firsthand the research methods used in cognitive science.

Workshops focusing on practical applications of artificial intelligence were also held during the event. Participants explored the capabilities of AI in creating interactive regional maps. The workshop marked the kickoff of an extended project that will continue with mentorship and support from the NCU Department of Cognitive Science team.

This initiative serves as another example of the NCU cognitive scientists’ community engagement. The department’s staff consistently bring their expert knowledge beyond academia, reaching local communities, schools, municipalities, and institutions where scientific discourse does not always reach on a daily basis. Through these initiatives, they combine science outreach, interdisciplinary research, and close cooperation with public, civil society, and business partners.

This is how we envision social impact and sharing expert knowledge. We head to places where expert insights are harder to access; that’s why we visit smaller municipalities and invite youth from rural schools, seniors, and local communities, explains professor Arkadiusz Gut
