In the new article, a group of our researchers conducted a meta-analysis examining how VR/MR and AI are used in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.

PhD students Albert Łukasik and Milena Celebudzka, along with Prof. Arkadiusz Gut checked whether VR/MR combined with an AI can help prevent and treat chronic diseases. Researchers acknowledge how burdensome the treatment of these diseases is and draw attention to factors that often arise during this process. They want to see if these tools will help increase motivation, engagement, and compliance during treatment.

The Impact of VR

To motivate: Researchers believe that „Due to the immersive nature of VR, patients are more willing to participate in the therapeutic process, as tasks performed in a virtual environment are often more engaging, enjoyable, and less stressful than those in traditional methods”.
To train: VR can help patients to engage in moving exercises that can help the whole treatment.
To reduce pain: They also concluded that patients can use „VR to reduce pain and anxiety, support gentle physical activation, conduct cognitive training, and participate in psychoeducation that helps them understand the complexity of their disease and learn coping strategies”.
To educate: Scientists also concluded that VR can be used as a tool to introduce children to a treatment process by making them play educational games.

The Role of AI

Personalization: Researchers believe that using AI’s algorithms can help adjust the level of difficulty of exercises to each patient.
Visualization: They also think that using AI chatbots can help monitor one’s treatment and help them remember to take medicine or to go to the next visit with a doctor.

What’s next?

The study showed the impact of VR and AI on treatment. The meta-analysis may serve as a guideline for the future development and use of these tools. The researchers also provide guidance on which technical and social aspects should be considered in further work.
