Mind and soul across the lands
New interdisciplinary study that draws on cognitive science, the psychology of religion, linguistics, and philosophy.
How does the soul influence the mind, and how does the mind influence the soul? Are they separate? Or are they connected? In this new study, Professor Gut and an inter-university and international team are investigating how followers of different religions in various countries perceive the concepts of mind and soul. To this end, they surveyed 225 Polish Catholics, 272 Orthodox Ukrainians, and 198 Islamic Kazakh. Participants were asked about: existence, origin, mutability and post-mortem fate of the mind and the soul.
The study revealed which religious groups believe most strongly in life after death, and whether they also believe in the existence of the soul and the mind. The participants also answered questions about which functions they attribute to the mind and which to the soul. Later in the study, the researchers examined how believers perceive the spirituality of the soul and the mind.
